Subject: Dumber by Degrees
L.K Hanson's March 5 cartoon imagines that suspicion of "experts" equals aversion to facts. A
humorist who once said "you get dumber by degrees" did NOT mean that knowledge is bad but that
the entrance requirement for many academic fields is affirmation of the "rules of the guild." For
example, you cannot be an astrophysicist and doubt the Big Bang. I could go on.
